Discover the world of Raspberry Pi computing devices, beloved by smart-home enthusiasts, electronics hobbyists, and parents whose children are learning Computer Science. These small, affordable, and highly customizable single board computers have become the foundation for countless IoT and IIoT devices in use today.

Smart-home enthusiasts, electronics hobbyists, and parents whose children are learning Computer Science are likely familiar with the Raspberry Pi lineup of computing devices. These single board computers are compact, energy-efficient, ARM-based, and offer extensive configurability. They serve as the backbone for a vast array of IoT and IIoT devices currently deployed globally.

The Raspberry Pi ecosystem boasts a wide range of hardware accessories, a robust software library, and a diverse community of users that spans from hobbyists to industrial clients who integrate these devices into specialized edge-computing hardware.

Based on the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5, the EdgeLogix-1145 by OpenEmbed, a company headquartered in Shenzhen, is an industrial controller that blends edge computing capabilities, CLP functions, and IIoT gateway features. Enclosed in a rugged housing, the 1145 model offers eight digital inputs and outputs, four analog inputs (including power), and four 0-5 volt outputs for use in industrial environments.

Connectivity options abound with RS232, two RS485 ports, USB 2.0, HDMI 2.0 for video output, two gigabit Ethernet RJ45 ports, 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0. Additionally, the mini PCIe port allows for cellular modem connectivity (4G LTE) or LoRaWAN integration.

Equipped with 32GB of eMMC Flash storage, an M.2 slot for NVMe drives, and up to 8GB of DDR4 RAM, the EdgeLogix-1145 positions itself as an edge-based AI controller as AI capabilities continue to evolve. Users interested in running local AI models on the device may consider opting for a larger eMMC storage capacity.

Designed for versatility, the device can be mounted on DIN rails or walls and is engineered to operate reliably in harsh industrial conditions. The aluminum and plastic housing provides thermal insulation, allowing the EdgeLogix-1145 to function within temperatures ranging from -20°C to +60°C.

For mission-critical operations requiring uninterrupted functionality, customers have the option to include a built-in UPS to manage power fluctuations and facilitate graceful shutdowns. An optional encryption chip (ATECC608A) is available for enhanced security in deployments.

As IIoT devices increasingly integrate into TCP/IP networks, the ability to bridge OT networks and IT infrastructure grows in importance. The EdgeLogix-1145 supports Modbus and OPC UA mesh networks, complemented by compatibility with Codesys, Node-Red, N3uron, Balena, and Ignition. The system’s quad-core, 64-bit Cortex-A76 ARM processor operates at speeds up to 2.4GHz, offering silent operation thanks to passive cooling.

The EdgeLogix-1145 model is available on Alibaba, starting at $289.00, with the extended I/O variant priced around $345.

For those keen on delving deeper into edge computing, industry insights can be gleaned from the Edge Computing Expo, hosting events in Amsterdam, California, and London.
