Microscale 3D printing has taken a colorful turn with a new technique that allows for the dynamic tuning of resin to create objects with multiple colors. While traditional extrusion-based methods are commonly used for 3D printing at the macroscale, microscale printing typically requires more intricate processes. Two-photon polymerization (TPP) is a popular technique for microscale printing, utilizing lasers to cure individual pixels known as voxels. However, incorporating multiple colors using TPP has been a challenge due to the time-consuming realignment required.

In a groundbreaking development, Metin Sitti and his team have introduced an electric field-coupled TPP system that enables the on-demand modulation of 3D-printed structural color. The key to this innovation lies in a specially formulated resin made of oblique helicoidal cholesteric liquid crystals. These crystals change color when exposed to electric fields of varying strengths, allowing for the creation of vibrant and dynamic color patterns in microscale 3D printed objects.

To demonstrate the capabilities of their new technique, the researchers crafted a microscale replica of the famous Chinese statue, Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow, in multiple colors. Beyond artistic endeavors, the team envisions practical applications for their technology in fields such as optics and anti-counterfeiting.

The study detailing this groundbreaking work has been published in PNAS Nexus, shedding light on the exciting possibilities of microscale 3D printing with tunable color. This innovative approach not only expands the creative horizons of 3D printing but also opens up new avenues for functional and visually captivating applications in various industries.
