Emerging Trends in Data Center Infrastructure: January 2026 Update

The growth in demand for new data centers continues unabated. With new projects being announced on a weekly basis, staying informed about the latest developments in the data center industry can be quite challenging. This curated selection of highlights from the past month will make it easier for you to keep up with the latest news and trends in data center design, construction, and related developments.

The data center industry is experiencing a surge in activity, with new projects and investments being unveiled across North America. In Port Washington, Wisconsin, Vantage Data Centers has initiated the construction of the Lighthouse data center project. This campus will consist of four data centers delivering 902 MW of IT capacity as part of Oracle and OpenAI’s Stargate initiative. Alphabet has also made a significant move by acquiring clean energy developer Intersect Power for $4.75 billion, enhancing Google’s access to electricity for its data centers. GridFree AI in Houston announced the launch of South Dallas One, its first grid-independent site with substantial power capacity. Private equity firm KKR & Company has committed to investing in Compass Datacenters’ portfolio, reflecting the growing interest in the digital infrastructure sector. Additionally, Yondr Group achieved a key milestone in the development of its Northern Virginia campus, while UK-based Nscale announced a major investment in a colocation agreement with WhiteFiber in North Carolina.

Moving to Latin America, TikTok has entered the market with a substantial investment in a new data center in Brazil. Elea Data Centers in Brazil signed a Memorandum of Understanding to bring sustainable AI innovation to Rio de Janeiro. In Mexico, KIO Data Centers expanded its presence with the launch of QRO2, adding to its data center capacity in the region.

In Europe, Ireland has lifted restrictions on connecting new data centers to the grid, providing clarity for future developments. Amazon Web Services received approval for the construction of three new data centers in Dublin. Goodman Group and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board formed a partnership to develop data center projects in key European cities. Digital Realty commenced the construction of a new data center in Frankfurt, while Nostrum Data Centers announced a major project in Spain with ECOM. Deutsche Bank highlighted the potential sale of RWE’s former UK coal plant to Amazon, signaling further growth opportunities in the sector.

In Asia-Pacific, Singapore launched its second Data Center Call for Application, aiming to enhance the region’s position as a hub for AI and data center investment. Digital Realty collaborated with BW Digital to improve data center connectivity between Singapore and Indonesia. Vantage inaugurated its fourth data center in Malaysia, fully leased to a single customer. Subzero Engineering opened a new R&D data center in Vietnam to support regional growth and innovation.

The Middle East and Africa witnessed significant developments, with Open Access Data Centres acquiring NTT’s data centers in South Africa. Khazna Data Centres acquired land in Saudi Arabia for a new data center project, while The Cavaleros Group announced two major developments in South Africa. Ooredoo in Qatar partnered with Oracle to deploy a sovereign cloud and AI platform, and Brookfield and Qai unveiled a $20 billion AI infrastructure project in the country.
