The Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) is thrilled to introduce a groundbreaking competition to select a strategic Energy and Data Centre Partner (EDCP) for its expansive 700-hectare site in South Wales. Positioned on a former open-cast mine, equivalent in size to Gibraltar, the facility aims to combine Renewable Energy Sources (RES) with a cutting-edge data center to drive progress and sustainability.
The EDCP Invitation to Tender (ITT) is currently live on the Sell to Wales platform, with the competition closing on November 21st. The chosen partner will be announced in Spring 2026, marking a significant milestone for the GCRE project. Interested parties are encouraged to participate in this pioneering opportunity.
Simon Jones, Chief Executive of GCRE Ltd, highlights the site’s potential for renewable energy and data infrastructure development. With existing power grids and upcoming fiber connectivity, the site is primed for sustainable growth and innovation in the rail industry.
Jones emphasizes the importance of this partnership for GCRE’s future success, noting that a strong power infrastructure is crucial for attracting private rail investments and driving economic growth in the region.
The competition aligns with GCRE’s mission to promote rail innovation and local prosperity, creating new job opportunities and enhancing skills in South West Wales. Jones is optimistic about the economic prospects, citing the need for sustainable energy to support technological advancements like AI.
