The Seattle climate hackathon brought together fourteen teams vying for a chance to win a portion of $10,000 in prize money. YIMBY AI emerged victorious, claiming the $5,000 grand prize for their innovative tool that leverages machine learning and AI to simplify the process of building accessory dwelling units (ADUs) or multifamily buildings on homeowners’ properties. This initiative aims to promote infill building, which not only provides much-needed housing but also increases density, leading to reduced greenhouse emissions through decreased transportation needs and land conservation efforts.
The platform developed by YIMBY AI allows users to visualize the addition of new units and offers essential local regulatory information for obtaining permits. According to team lead Chris Esh, the challenge with infill development lies in the complexity of zoning and building codes, making it daunting for most homeowners to navigate these regulations.
The event took place at the Seattle Climate Innovation Hub, a collaborative space established by the City of Seattle, the University of Washington, 9Zero, and VertueLab, with support from Microsoft and Amazon. The hackathon attracted a diverse group of participants, including college students, entrepreneurs, working professionals, and retirees, all united by a shared commitment to addressing climate change.
Various projects were showcased during the competition, ranging from a device that harnesses water power for clean energy generation to a research platform utilizing conversational AI tools to enhance understanding of utility operations. Teams focused on different areas such as energy efficiency in commercial buildings, low-carbon industrial chemicals, small-scale composting opportunities, and plant-based, carbon-negative packaging for grocery items.
The prize winners included YIMBY AI for the Grand Prize, Acclaim Climate as the Runner-Up, Composti-plan for Best Non-Profit/Public Interest, Big Green Loop for Most Climate Impact/Gigatons Removed, and Building Energy Benchmark Stars for Most Business Ready. Each team received recognition and support for their innovative solutions aimed at combating climate change and promoting sustainability.
