Investor confidence in artificial intelligence may be waning as tech stocks endure a challenging week. The Nasdaq Composite Index plummeted by 3%, marking its worst performance since President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement in April.

Tech giants such as Palantir, Oracle, and Nvidia experienced significant stock price drops this week, despite their strong performance earlier in the year. This downward trend follows announcements from Meta and Microsoft about their plans to invest heavily in AI, with both companies seeing a 4% decrease in stock value.

According to Cresset Capital’s Jack Ablin, the current market volatility can be attributed to stretched valuations and high expectations. Economic factors like the government shutdown, declining consumer sentiment, and layoffs are also contributing to the overall decline in the stock market.

While the tech-heavy Nasdaq struggled, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average fared slightly better, with declines of 1.6% and 1.2%, respectively. Despite these challenges, experts remain cautiously optimistic about the future of tech stocks and artificial intelligence investments.
