Microsoft has announced a groundbreaking investment of $17.5 billion in India, marking its largest commitment in Asia. The investment, spread over four years from 2026 to 2029, aims to bolster the country’s AI infrastructure and promote widespread adoption. This move follows a previous $3 billion investment declared earlier this year, reflecting Microsoft’s dedication to advancing India’s technological landscape.

The funding is intended to drive the development of cloud and AI infrastructure, skilling initiatives, and operational enhancements in India. Microsoft envisions a transition from digital public infrastructure to AI public infrastructure in the upcoming decade, fostering a more equitable and distinctly Indian future. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is currently on a multi-city “India AI” tour, engaging with key stakeholders and policymakers.

The investment will focus on three main areas:

  • Scale: Microsoft plans to build hyperscale infrastructure to facilitate AI adoption in India. The India South Central cloud region, set to launch in mid-2026, will play a crucial role in this endeavor. Additionally, Microsoft will expand its operational data center regions in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune.
  • Skills: Microsoft is committed to equipping 20 million Indians with essential AI skills by 2030, doubling its previous target. Already, 5.6 million individuals have received training since January, with over 125,000 benefiting from improved work opportunities.
  • Sovereignty: To address data control and compliance concerns, Microsoft is introducing Sovereign Public Cloud and Sovereign Private Cloud options for Indian organizations. These offerings aim to enhance data residency, regulatory compliance, governance, and operational isolation.

Moreover, Microsoft’s advanced AI capabilities will be integrated into key digital public platforms, benefiting 310 million informal workers in India. This strategic move aligns with the company’s broader mission to empower individuals through technology.

With over 22,000 employees in various Indian cities, Microsoft plays a significant role in the country’s technology landscape. The company’s commitment to driving innovation and fostering digital transformation is evident in its ongoing efforts.

In a parallel development, Microsoft President Brad Smith announced additional investments in Canada, emphasizing similar objectives of skills development and digital sovereignty. This concerted global effort underscores Microsoft’s dedication to empowering communities through technology.
