Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit 2025 provided a unique opportunity to converse with a key executive about the future of wearables.

Engaging in a dialogue with Dino Bekis, the VP & GM of Wearables & Mixed Signal Solutions at Qualcomm, shed light on the challenges facing current smartwatches. One of the major drawbacks highlighted was the limited battery life and cumbersome charging methods prevalent in most Wear OS devices. Bekis emphasized Qualcomm’s commitment to enhancing battery longevity, aiming to achieve a week-long battery life, a significant leap from the current one-day standard.

Qualcomm’s influence in optimizing smartwatch battery performance stems from its chip integration within Wear OS watches. Bekis elaborated on the strategies employed by the company to reach the ambitious seven-day battery life goal, emphasizing the importance of reducing power consumption through innovative hardware accelerators and process node enhancements.

Anticipating the timeline for achieving extended battery life, Bekis suggested a potential five-day milestone in the near future, with a six to seven-day benchmark achievable within the next few years. While the journey towards enhanced battery performance may take time, Qualcomm remains dedicated to driving innovation in smartwatch technology.

Addressing the issue of charging convenience, Bekis envisioned a shift towards wireless charging as a solution to the current array of proprietary chargers. Emphasizing the simplicity and efficiency of wireless charging, he foresees a future where consumers can seamlessly power their devices without the hassle of multiple connectors. Although the transition to wireless charging may take time, Bekis remains optimistic about its widespread adoption within the next five years.
