Before the Seattle Sounders clinched their inaugural Leagues Cup title with a thrilling victory over Inter Miami, various tech executives were seen mingling on the field at Lumen Field on Sunday prior to the highly anticipated match.
We observed numerous prominent Seattle-area tech leaders who are part owners of the Sounders, such as Truveta CEO Terry Myerson, Microsoft CFO Amy Hood, Zapier CTO Chee Chew, Redapt CEO Rick Cantu, and former Microsoft executive Joe Belfiore.
Additionally, several other tech executives are also members of the Sounders ownership group, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and former Amazon Web Services CEO Adam Selipsky.
There is a noticeable overlap between Seattle’s tech industry and its professional sports teams. For example, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is a minority owner of the Seattle Kraken hockey team, while the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen once owned the Seattle Seahawks football team.
As of February 2025, the Sounders ranked as the seventh most valuable Major League Soccer team, with a valuation of $800 million, a significant increase from $310 million in 2018, according to Forbes.
Notable guests at the event included comedian and long-time Sounders owner Drew Carey and Inter Miami owner David Beckham.
In front of a record crowd of 69,314 at Lumen Field, the Sounders secured a 3-0 victory over Inter Miami to claim the Leagues Cup 2025 championship. This win marked the first time a team had won all five major North American soccer trophies.
The Leagues Cup is an annual tournament that features teams from both MLS and Liga MX, the premier soccer league in Mexico, held during the middle of the MLS season.
