Samsung and Tesla have finalized a groundbreaking $16.5 billion agreement for Samsung to supply Tesla with its next-generation chips.

Elon Musk announced the deal on X, emphasizing the strategic significance of Samsung’s new Texas fab being dedicated to manufacturing Tesla’s AI6 chip.

Tesla’s AI6 chip, also known as Hardware 6, is designed to power various applications ranging from the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system to high-performance AI training in data centers, showcasing Tesla’s innovative approach to chip design.

Musk revealed that Tesla is collaborating with TSMC for AI5 chips, while the A15 generation, tailored for FSD, will be produced initially in TSMC’s Taiwan factory before moving to its Arizona facility. Samsung’s existing production of the A14 chip adds to its technological prowess.

The agreement with Samsung marks a significant milestone for the company, which has faced challenges in attracting major clients. Musk hinted at the possibility of Tesla surpassing the initial $16.5 billion investment in Samsung chips, indicating a promising future collaboration.

In a subsequent post, Musk mentioned that Samsung has granted Tesla the opportunity to optimize manufacturing efficiency, underscoring the shared commitment to progress.

Musk expressed personal involvement in enhancing manufacturing processes, highlighting the proximity of the fab to his residence as a convenient factor.

Tesla’s transition from Nvidia’s Drive platform to its custom chip in 2019 marked a significant shift in its technological strategy. The FSD Computer (FSDC), developed by Samsung, reflects Tesla’s commitment to innovation and redundancy in automated driving systems.

With a focus on custom chips, Tesla aims to redefine itself from an automaker to an AI and robotics powerhouse, signaling a transformative phase in the company’s evolution.
