In his article, Steve Clifford, Director of Data Centres at EMCOR UK, emphasizes the benefits of upgrading existing data centres instead of building new ones. This approach can save time, costs, and reduce carbon footprint, giving operators a strategic edge in the industry.

The demand for data storage, processing power, and connectivity is constantly increasing, driven by technologies like AI, cloud computing, edge computing, IoT, and digital transformation. As a result, operators are facing challenges in meeting the growing demand for data centre capacity, making retrofitting existing facilities a valuable alternative.

Retrofitting involves strategically modernizing live environments by upgrading mechanical and electrical systems, replacing aging infrastructure, and reconfiguring layouts to support higher rack densities and changing cooling needs. This approach not only improves operational efficiency but also aligns with global sustainability goals by extending the lifespan of existing buildings in a more environmentally friendly manner.
