During a presentation at CES, Palmer Luckey, the creator of Oculus, and Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, surprised the audience by expressing their fondness for the “good old days” of technology. They reminisced about the aesthetics and design of vintage tech products, claiming that they were superior to modern ones.

Luckey, who found success in the VR industry and now leads the defense company Anduril, and Ohanian shared a common sentiment that things were better in the past.

Their critique, however, was not aimed at technological advancements themselves. Luckey emphasized his support for AI and how it has improved workflows. Instead, they focused on the style and form of older tech products, suggesting that these elements will shape the future of technology.

Ohanian voiced his belief that some older products were not just nostalgic but objectively better. Luckey echoed this sentiment by praising the intentional act of curating music libraries in the past, contrasting it with today’s culture of endless downloads.

Furthermore, Luckey highlighted the phenomenon of younger generations expressing nostalgia for eras they did not experience firsthand. He argued that their appreciation for old technology stems from recognizing its superior quality.

The growing trend of nostalgic tech design supports Luckey and Ohanian’s views. With an increasing interest in physical media and retro-inspired gadgets, it is evident that consumers are seeking a connection to the past amidst the digital age.

Given the shift in consumer interests towards nostalgia, Luckey and Ohanian’s appreciation for vintage tech could prove to be a smart business move. Monetizing the nostalgia trend could be a lucrative opportunity for companies.

Luckey has already capitalized on this trend with the launch of ModRetro Chromatic, a retro gaming device reminiscent of the Game Boy era. Priced at $199, the device allows users to play classic cartridge games from the 1990s and has received acclaim for its design and functionality.

Ohanian, who shares Luckey’s enthusiasm for gaming, showcased the ModRetro unit during the presentation and expressed his interest in creating a vintage-style game of his own.

While the discussion primarily revolved around the appeal of retro technology, Luckey’s focus on Anduril, his defense startup, was briefly mentioned. Despite his involvement in the defense industry, Luckey’s passion for vintage tech remains evident.

As the conversation touched on foreign policy, Luckey made bold statements about the geopolitical relationship between the United States and China. His views on the future of technology and international affairs reflect his unconventional approach to innovation and nostalgia.
